The activities of the Agricultural Student Council at Hohenheim are diverse, whereby the diversity is directly related to the number of students who are involved there. The main part of our activities is made up of the following:
- Participation in university committees
- Introductions and support for first semester students
- Contributions to the enrichment of social life (parties, excursions etc.)
Participation in the committees
An essential part of the student representatives' work is their participation in the various committees of the university. The Fachschaft is responsible for those committees that work at the faculty level. There are a lot of them:
- the faculty council
- the Academic Commissions
- several boards of examiners
- the Traineeships Committee
Most of the members in these committees are (of course!) the professors. The leadership is therefore also incumbent on a person from this circle. For example, the dean heads the faculty council. Further interest groups in the committees are the academic mid-level faculty, the academic service and the students.
In each of these committees there are between 1 and 6 students, who represent our opinion and may vote on decisions (exception: the examination committees). Before a meeting is held in one of these committees, the respective student representatives come to the student council meeting and inform the students present there about the upcoming agenda items. Afterwards, we discuss items that are of interest to us and try to come to a common opinion, which the respective representatives can then present at the committee meeting. After the committee meeting, the decisions are then announced in the student council and any further steps that may be necessary are discussed.
First semester thesis
For us in the student council, first semester work means the supervision and counselling of first-year students in the first weeks of their studies. This takes place, for example, through courses such as the First Semester Cafete, Introduction Day and First Semester TMS, but also through tutorials in which the problems and wishes of each individual new student can be addressed. In this context, the First Semester Weekend deserves a special mention, which usually takes place somewhere in a hut in Baden Württemberg, where first and higher semesters have a lot of fun together.
But even after the first few weeks of study there are always members of the student council who can help with any questions or problems.
Student council & life at Hohenheim
The one has quite a lot to do with the other! Anyone who has lived and studied in Hohenheim for a while will certainly agree that student life in Hohenheim would be much poorer without the regular parties on Thursday evenings in the TMS. The Agricultural Student Council organises the Thursday TMS three times each in the winter and summer semester. As a highlight we can mention our so-called X-Mas Charts, which take place every year just before Christmas, and the hectare exchange in the summer semester.
The Fachschaft Agrar is also involved in the AStA winter and summer festivals organised by all the student councils. We regularly provide catering in the TMS.
In addition to parties, the student council also organises a hike once each in the winter and summer semester, usually around 1 November and 1 May. The respective destinations are announced in good time on the student council board and via the mailing list.
